Conservative Woodstock Rocks the Capital
Patriotic anti-big-government taxpayers blast through the million protester mark.
September 12, 2009, Washington, D.C. – by EL MARCO
Protesters flooded Washington today in what people in the crowd are calling “a conservative Woodstock”. Like the liberal Woodstock of the ’60s, thousands were rumored stranded on freeways. Some walked in to DC, ditching their cars and busses. I walked with a 5 deep 6 block long column of protesters from Pennsylvania who told me they had walked miles from where they were forced by gridlock to leave their busses. Networks including Fox News continued through the time I’m writing this at 8 p.m. local Eastern time reporting that “tens of thousands” showed up. What is up with that? When will we get some reliable reporting out of the corporate media types? UPDATE: Two days later, there is still no conclusive count of the participants. Michelle Malkin’s site goes over the whole issue on a post linked at the end of this article.
This event had been promoted as a taxpayer “tea party” but the crowd’s concerns were wide ranging, from outrage at the corrupt ACORN activists and Obama’s socialist cadre known as Czars, to Obama’s naked untruthfulness. Protesters also displayed signs mocking Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for smearing the grassroots movement as “astroturfers” and an “angry mob”.
I think this gathering should be appreciated as the extremely important historical event that it is. This is the first great conservative anti-statist manifestation in American history. The conservative movement, which developed in the post-WWII, Cold War environment has now fully matured into the most significant political movement of the 21st century. I believe that this day could be referred to in the not too distant future as the day that changed America. This was the day the great silent conservative majority finally found its voice.
Many of the attendees were quite meek and timid and were unsure of exactly what to expect, this being the first time in their lives they’d been involved in a protest movement. Their fears evaporated early in the day and people reveled in the camaraderie , the joy and sheer civility that was exhibited at the entire event. Chants of “Freedom, freedom, freedom”, “No more czars! No more czars!” carried through the air without the slightest hint of the rancor which is the norm at the many leftist rallies I have photographed over the years.
The two photos above show a tiny fraction of the multitude that surged through the American capitol. I saw signs and heard lots of comments comparing this event to Woodstock. At the time this photo was taken, around 1:00 p.m., Pennsylvania Avenue was still jammed completely, and the mall was packed from the Capitol Building past the Washington Monument. See photo here.
Protesters came from every state in the union. This man came from San Antonio, TX. He said that he was really sorry he hadn’t brought his family. He stated that being a black conservative he was unwilling to expose his children to what he expected would be a lot of liberal abuse. He was thrilled with the overall tenor of the event and the fact that no liberals were present to harass him. He spoke about how incredibly intolerant the left is to black individuals who don’t bow to the party line.
These Ohioans took a day off their rodeo bull-riding schedule. They said they’ll be back at it tomorrow.
Mike Pence (R-Indiana) was one of the speakers who addressed the crowd: “After years of fighting runaway government on this hill, you people look like the cavalry to me..I believe we are on the verge of a great American awakening.”
San Diego radio host Mason Weaver said from the podium: “I came here because I thought you might want to hear a black man speak without a teleprompter…This government is trying to make a nation of dependent people. Americans have always been independent people…This is not a Republican thing, it’s not a Democrat thing. It’s not a black thing or a white thing. It’s an American thing…We the people are telling them ‘No more! We’ve had enough!”
In the very center of the photo, above the Silence is Consent – Can You Hear Us Now sign, you can see Pennsylvania Ave., which at this time is totally blocked with protesters who cannot move forward to the Capitol area. Sorry, full up.
There were notable differences though, in the behavior of these attendees. Although the legend of Woodstock is that there was a friendly atmosphere of camaraderie, the truth is that most people were there for the drugs, sex and rock and roll. Today in D.C. there was a true kinship amongst these people based on shared values and intellectual understanding of what America is and how its future is imperiled by big radical government.
No one was having sex in the Reflecting Pool let alone the mud, and I saw no one projectile vomiting on the steps of the Capitol. There were no warnings to avoid the bad acid which would send you on a trip to the hospital. Not just a different era, but a different level of civilized behavior and thought. Oh, and by the way, these people didn’t leave tons of garbage behind when they left. Actually they left no trash behind at all.

Now they too are marching in the streets. They know what tyranny looks like and they are alarmed by the direction the new administration is taking.

World’s #1 Crypto-Marxist. Endorsed by Fidel Castro: “The most powerful progressive candidate to the U.S. presidency.” – GRANMA, Havana, May 26, 2008
Dictator Castro did indeed endorse Obama. Note that he used the word progressive to describe Barack? Well thats because the Libs gave the word liberal such a bad smell by their behavior and policies over the years that they had to abandon it. They started referring to themselves as progressives and figured no one would notice the word’s communist pedigree. It means progress on the road to socialism and Castro understands it that way.
Well darn it Martha, look at that! The president really is a progressive just like NPR says he is !!
Nancy Pelosi has accused patriotic tea-party goers of “carrying swastikas” implying that they are Nazi sympathizers or worse. This event was knee deep in hammers and sickles and words like “socialist” “communist” and “Marxist”. It continues to fascinate me how the Democrat Party tolerates this without ever objecting or attempting to refute this widespread view of Obama. When will the MSM ask the questions about The Chosen One’s communist buddies and endorsers? And why do communists who absolutely loath the USA, like Castro, Chavez, Ortega, and Michael Moore worship at the alter of Obama?
Ever present at Tea Parties are Sons of Liberty re-enactors. The couple on the left is from Ohio and the young lady on the right is not but she joined in the photo when I invited her. The clothing for the Ohio couple was hand stitched by the lady on the left. The lady on the right also stitched her own. This is what really hip conservatives are wearing these days. It’s all about FREEDOM!

Thanks for visiting! Never Give In and Never Forget. El Marco

I wish I could have made it to DC to join in the protest. But I attended a local one in CA in solidarity with my American brothers and sisters.
Marco: great work as usual. I was with the Indiana Tea Party folk and the Behney for Seante foks. We were near the front of the circle drive and we were packed in pretty well up there. Pics on flickr at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/inteaparty/sets/72157622352042712/

a year and a half ago i called this bum what he is, a leftist , socialist, marxist, communist, pro muslim, anti judeo christian and so far its all come to pass. when i see him walk off the helicopter and salute the men in un iform it makes me sick. he despises the military and will do everything to destroy them. thomas sowell said in early 2008 that we will need a military takeover. was he on to something? god bless america.
I have never seen a movement so insistent on cutting its own throat. Keep up with the nasty pictures of our President. You are making him look like a saint to the rest of America.
Take it from me, for every one that was there ten more wanted to be and couldn’t make it.
Excellent work my friends; your picture perfect story capturing the indomitable American spirit is well worth those sleepless hours you spent working long into the night.
You people are so damned gullible!
I can only imagine that not a one of you simpletons could not define the difference between Socialist, Communist, or Fascist?
I would love to know if any of you ‘outraged’ Americans were this pissed off while Bush was selling away this country to foreign multi-nationals? And was busily invading a country that did not attacks us in the first place and made things worse? Although, I have no doubt you people were freaking out while Clinton was in office doing the same thing and were outspoken then, why the silence the last eight years?
Where was all this outrage back then? Or is all this outrage for when a Democrat is in the White House, let alone a black one??
Lest I remind you that we are a nation of laws and a Constitution… where was all this outrage while Bush was excusing and moralizing detention without charge and torture in our names??
While I do agree with just about everything of what your anger is about… I question your collective motivations as it pertains for when to be so angered!

The war is the irrational vs the rational. The good news about the irrational is they don’t know what they want so they can be manipulated (ACORN knows this well). The bad news about the irrational is you can’t win an argument with them. How they see the world and how they see themselves is based on perception not reality. Don’t argue capitalism. They don’t know what the word means nor do they have the capacity to. Say you want many small businesses competing against one another and not mega corporations propped up by the government. Tell them oil companies have nothing to do with capitalism, tell them the cable company isn’t capitalistic. These are industries propped up by the big government. Directly attacking an irrational’s philosophy only angers them and exhausts you. Dave Ramsey seems to be the best converter out there because he embodies conservative values without beating people over the head. ACORN had good short term tactic, but you know what they say about cockroaches and sunlight.
Make no mistake. The war can only be won by converting most if not all to the fiscally conservative banner. Feed them with a consistent non-mystical view of the world and no snake oil salesman will be able to get into office again.
I was awake at 4:00 am 9/12/09, wishing that I was able to go to Washington and join the tea party. However I am unable to stand or walk long enough to participate in these actitives. The thought came to me that If this march fails to get the proper attention… the next one should be on a Monday and we all pack a lunch and coolers and drive to the capitol and grid lock the city.(the government knows gridlock they have been doing it for decades). This is something that I can do.Take a spare can of gas. and go in with a full tank and see how long it takes for them to realize we are serious.
Juan Williams on Fox summed it up by saying, “It’s just a bunch of people complaining about Death Panels.” What a fool.
It’s very gratifying to see the will to live in Liberty in action. So many excellent, poignant sayings on signs carried by real Americans; who spent their own money and time to make an unprecidented statement. I’m with y’all. Let’s press on.
To the readers: Please don’t call it revolution, but restoration of Constitutional government.
Al Reasin
MLK amplified:
The protests are the heart and the body. The brain of the movement is starting to form. Then it will be a real movement that will be difficult to hijack unlike the fake conservative movement in the 90s. This one is based on ideology not party.
The reality is national government isn’t needed except for what is stated in the constitution. Conservatives whored themselves out to the Republican in the 90s thinking that morality could be nationalized and the Washingtonians shysters gladly accepted. If the movement stays true to smaller government and smaller government only that it will succeed. If it whores itself out again it could very well could mean the end of the United States. Accept democrats (there are a ton of them), accept everyone who believes the national government has gotten too big and the only solution is to permanently shut this mockery down. The movement will find there is about 90% of the population that wants this. The liberal movement is as shallow as their bromide, hallmark, mystical philosophy.
FANTASTIC! I couldn’t make it, but I was there in spirit. So inspiring!
LOL!!!
So Republicans obviously can’t even count. 65,000 somehow morphs into 2 million.
Mike De Genco (“Now we know who the crazies are,” above). Wake up, friend. These people ARE thinking for themselves. It’s time for the liberals to quit listening to the mainstream media (“you are getting sleepy, very sleepy”). Look at where this country is going. Read the founding documents. See that we are headed in the wrong direction and need to turn this country around.
I was there. Awsome just doesn’t come close to what it was like. I had tears in my eyes a number of times, especially when I saw the First Ammendment etched in granite on the front of a 12 story building. People in the crowd were wonderful. Some of their signs were touching, most were funny, but all came from the hearts of the citizens of the best country in the world. I will continue to attend roadside rallies and tea parties.
We have to preserve this freedom that we are blessed with.
Those of us here in Arkansas were with you in spirit on Saturday. Hopefully, our videos were delivered to the Congress by an attendee from Hot Springs. Of special note is the fact that although insurance companies, the AMA, AARP, drug companies and several others were bought off by the administration, the people have shown that we still are in charge, and a dominant force to be reckoned with. Lets keep the pressure on.
Thanks to all of you who went. I wanted to go so bad it wasn’t funny but having just gotten a new job I had to work. I am so proud of all the Americans who took the time to fight against The Obamanation.

I was there at 8:00 AM in Freedom Plaza. Cops said “You’ll get 20,000 in here. As soon as the Fife and Drum Corps started moving I marched beside them all the way to the Capitol.
As we marched it was as if the side streets vomited people from buses, cars and the subway stations. By 1:00 we were informed the crowd estimate was 1.5 Million and the crowd got much bigger and more tightly packed.
There was Zero violence. Zero arrests. Zero damage to property.
And not a piece of trash.
I have never been so proud to be an American in my life.
God bless all the Tea Party Protesters in D.C. yesterday…. thanks to all of you for being there and speaking for all of us who were back home…THERE WERE BILLIONS OF US BACK HOME WHO WERE WITH YOU ALL IN SPIRIT!!
Isn’t it just the most hilarious thing to see the utter confusion and derision on the faces of the Dems and liberal media as they try to figure out “what the hell is going on with all these people…. what are they so upset about and how can they be protesting when our country is being so well-cared for by obama and the dems!” They try soooooo hard to make us into this “angry mob”… but, the pictures are worth a thousand words and speak for themselves!! God help them!!
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!
My heart was with the protest even though I remained in California (to work)
I loved the viewing the various and creative posters, of which many expressed my thoughts. Even though the mainstream media didn’t give it much credit I think the event is a resounding positive moment in the history of an America that the liberals are desperate to destroy. Long live the Federal Republic!
Where were all you “Patriots” when Bush,Cheney,Rumsfeld,Rice and Gonzalez trashed the Constitution with illegal wiretapping, ignoring the Geneva Convention (which we signed), starting an unnecessary war, torturing suspected enemies and abolishing habeas corpus. I was serving my country. Now you’re all afraid someone is going to get something for nothing and you might have to forfeit some of your treasure. Shame on all of you.
Using Van Jones’ (you know..Obams’s FORMER Green Jobs CZAR…oops sorry “special advisor”) words:
“don’t stop there…don’t stop there…we aren’t going to put a new battery into a system that’s broke…we want a new system….”
Take back America! Vote them out in 2010.
Thank You for this post.
Fabulous event, fabulous photos…sorry I could not be there.
THANK YOU AMERICA!! You guys are awesome! You are on web sites in Japan!! the UK!! and I’m sure all over the world. The more our president shuns us the bigger we get. I can’t believe he disapeered and not one member of his staff could talk to us??? What is up with that. They are afraid, very afraid. When was the last time conservatives came out to be heard? It’s been a very long time, so keep up the good work and spread the word we are going to clean up Washington! Conservatives=freedom/liberty for all. It’s time to stop the lies that we have ignored for years about us and show people who we really are. I hope we make you proud.
I was there at the Grand TEA Party and beyond my previous comment above, we need to consider what is in the future. Many I talked to are worried that congress will ignore us. That may be helped by the minimal coverage by the media, even FOX who concentrated on the Yale student’s disappearance said my wife, who could not attend, and by the low media estimates of participants; 10s of thousands stated FOX, not 100’s of thousand or millions as was more likely the case; 1.5 million from different police officers questioned.
So what if congress ignores us? Well, we would not want to emulate Shay’s Rebellion if at all possible. While it awakened the politicians of the time to the limitations of the Articles of Confederation, it cost 4 Patriots lives and many more wounded. I can imagine if the same sort of armed insurrection started now how this Administration would react; an excuse for martial law and sedition acts as was done during President Wilson’s Administration for just criticizing government. A reported 100,000 people were arrested including the Socialists Parties presidential candidate over their freedom of speech exercise.
I worry that if our “march” on DC Saturday will not stop ObamaCare or even if the government option is dropped, the economic freedom issues (i.e. mandatory health care requirement under government mandates) and civil liberties (i.e. IRS held financial and doctors/hospital held medical records released to the government) will remain in some form. I don’t trust the conference committee’s outcome even if the Senate bill is milder in appearance.
What is a better example is the Income Tax Revolt in Tennessee in 1999. Oh, you didn’t hear about that revolt; neither had I since the MSM seems to have neglected to report much on this and it was before blogs were well known, so go to Intapundit’s report for some details. We should be prepared to follow that example set in Tennessee after the governor and legislature proposed to vote in a state income tax in 1999. The governor and legislature backed down and to this day TN is income tax free. As with MLK tactics, perseverance does win when you are right.
With the reported 26,000 TEA Party organizations in our great country, we could make life difficult for those cloistered in DC.

Makes me ashamed of myself for not going too. I totally support and appreciate the event and those that participated.
I was particularly impressed with the statement about although they were many and were upset they still respected the Capital by not trashing the place. This being in complete contrast to the type that attended the presidential inauguration.
Thanks to all of you were there yesterday, from another New Orleanian who could not come. You make me so proud, and you have already made a difference.
This may be our last chance to save our country from the radical LEFT. If we do lose it our Freedom may be lost for generations if not forever
If we lose it, the process will have taken less than a year!

At 81 I couldn’t have handled the heat, crowd or standing more than about a half hour. But seeing these pictures gives me hope that our country will survive in spite of our present government. I try to be an independent voter, checking out the candidates’ platforms, etc. Boy, has this one fooled a lot of us. As Shakespeare once said, “what fools we mortals” (can be) “are”!
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for capturing the day for the millions of us who couldn’t be in DC on 9/12/09. We did have 4000 enthusiatically patriotic soulmates in Denver at the Capitol from ~ 10:30 am to 1:30 pm MDT. Our primary chants were USA, ENough is Enough and Freedom Forever! (as opposed to Health Care Now).
God Bless all of you who attended. Your patriotism is appreciated by those of us who were unable to be there, more than you will ever know. Our hearts and thoughts were with you, and we will continue the fight to take back our country and eliminate corruption in our government. Thank you!
I was also there, from California. We had 100 times the gathering that Obama did in Minnesota, where he fled to have a last minute takeover speech. So, whatever that figures out to, that was our group size. I guess the media was using Biblical math. The fish and loaves of read scenario. Remember they were 5 loaves, but turned out having leftovers that were more than the 5 loaves. We were tens of thousands, but we filled the Capitol and surrounding area like were over a million. I will never trust a number count again. The roar of the crowd in the distance was chilling. The only thing we didn’t do correctly was to stay until they counted us all. That would have been the Woodstock factor. “By the time we got to DC, we were a million and a half strong.
It will be you guys that save this country! Thanks for being so brave and dedicated and strong! Wish I could have been there!
God Bless you all!

We watched the 11:00 p.m. news in the L.A. Area and all three major networks glossed over the story reporting that “a few thousand people had gathered in Washington D.C. to protest President Obama’s health care plans.” And that was it. About a 15 second spot with a blur of people carrying signs but no indication of the immensity of the protest. Network news is crap. I guess the only way we can get the honest truth is from FOX news. Reading this article is the most refreshed I’ve been since Obama was elected. Thank you God.
Itwas an honor and a pleasure to be among this swell of patriots yesterday! This is what’s so great about America. Power to the People!
God Bless America and these great citizens! THANK YOU FROM TEXAS! You are appreciated! I want to donate to this cause! AMAZING! Thanks for sharing, American Patriotism resurgence is alive. Never let up and never quit!!!
Thanks from my wife Alyona (an ex-Communist from the Soviets) and myself. The more we publicize the more that people will come out of the conservative closet and let the world know that “We Are Mad As Hell and We’re Just Not Going to Take It Anymore!!!”

The picture with overview of PA Avenue from Hot Air reminds me of the demonstration in Iran against voter fraud. I never thought it could be done in America, but when I came out of the metro station at 10:30 I was transfixed by the enormity of it all. Yes, I noticed the friendly atmosphere, the civility toward strangers, the lack of litter, no arguments or fights and the police showing respect for the 1.5 million or so people there. I have observed the ANSWER crowd up close and personal; I’ll stick with mine.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!! Thanks for sharing the truth of the day! According to most news agencies it either didn’t happen or only 14 people showed up. That’s ok, we know the truth, and the more they ignore us the bigger we get! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
Enjoyed seeing the pictures! Wish I could have been there! Go America!!!
